Review procedure

The Journal of Linguistic Anthropology strictly adheres to a double-blinded peer review process, respectively isolating reviewer and author identities.

Upon receiving a submission from authors, criteria are cross examined. Failure to meet these criteria results in either rejection of the submissions, or authors given an opportunity to revise according to stipulated criteria, and to then re-submit. Submissions then proceed to external reviewers.

We request that authors who submit articles provide the names of several academics who we may contact to review the manuscript.  However, selection of reviewers is at the discretion of the editorial board. The recommended reviewers must be experts, or must be at least highly versed in the field related to the submission. Reviewers must be prepared to provide an objective assessment, must have absolutely no knowledge of the manuscript prior to submission, and must not have collaborated nor assisted in the production of the manuscript in any way.

Authorship and ethical issues

Principal authorship, authorship order, and other credits should be based on the relative scientific or professional contributions of the individuals involved. All due consideration must be given to all contributing authors, and hence only to those authors who have contributed. Maintaining a high level of ethics remains central to the concerns of the JALA.

Should the submission be accepted for publication, The JALA Contributor’s Publishing Agreement will require the author(s) to declare any conflicting interests. All consequent conflicts between the author(s) and other parties remain the responsibility of the author(s), and it is thus understood that the author(s) has agreed to not in any way have compromised ownership, reputation, or property of any other party. Should a consequent issue arise, following the release of the publication, the JALA will most likely not recall the publication, but rather will require the author(s) to resolve the issue independently of the JALA.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from copyright holders for reproducing illustrations, tables, figures, or any other material previously published elsewhere.

The Journal of Asian Linguistic Anthropology views infringement of copyright, plagiarism, and any breaches of best practice in publication highly significant. The Journal here aims to increase the egalitarian positions of all authors and owners of property. All submitted work will be cross-checked with duplication-checking procedures and software. In the event where, by some error, a plagiarized work has been found post-publication, the JALA will seek to rectify this infringement, and will approach both public and institutional bodies connected to the author, so to reverse damages incurred, and will take appropriate legal action. The article, in this case, will also be retracted.

Acknowledgements

In accordance with the Guidance for Research Funders, Authors, and Publishers, issued by the Research Information Network (RIN), The Journal of Asian Linguistic Anthropology requires authors to acknowledge funding received for the research, articulately, as follows:

This work was supported by the [funding agency named in full] and the grant numbers of the funding are [xxx].

Authors should separate multiple grant numbers by commas, and in the case of receiving grants from more than one agency, authors must separate these different agencies by use of a semi-colon, with “and” before the final funder.

At times, researchers opt to draw from own funding, and must state this.

For more information on the guidance for Research Funders, Authors and Publishers, please visit: https://www.rin.ac.uk/funders-acknowledgement.

Article types

The Editors of the JALA encourage the submission of papers explicitly addressing issues of theory within (Asian) Linguistic Anthropology. They are especially interested in the following fields, pertinent to those working on or in Asian contexts:

  • Critically addressing or exploring current or traditional theory in Linguistics, Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, or related fields
  • Extending on current theoretical frameworks
  • Entrepreneurial extensions in Linguistic Anthropology, that is, the exploration of new ideas through a moderate epistemological risk
  • Assessments, and not blatant reductionist and deductive employment, of existing theories

However, this may be altered pending on the mutual agreement between The JALA and the author.
